A SIGN OF THE TIMES
[CINDY MCQUILKEN] She/Her, 20s, White. A small-town girl who moves to New York City in the 1960s to make it as a photographer. A fish out of water, but with passion and talent, she is destined for the artist’s life in NYC. Ahead of her time, a risk-taker. Not afraid to speak her mind and go after what she wants in life. Think: Marlo Thomas circa 1965. Moves and sings well. Pop Mezzo-Soprano.
[TANYA TEMPLETON] She/Her, 20s, Black. Cindy’s fierce and fun-loving roommate. Dreams of being a famous singer and topping the Billboard charts. Knows how to work a room. Independent, experienced, if not a bit cynical. Moves and sings well. Pop belter with a wide vocal range.
[MATT] He/Him, 20s, White. Cindy’s small-town boyfriend. Corn fed. Sweet, if not a bit naïve. Gets drafted to Vietnam, comes back in love with a Singaporean man (spoiler alert!). Pop Tenor or Bari Tenor with strong falsetto.
[BRIAN] He/Him, 30s-40s, White. A Don Draper type, classic 1960s ad-man. A titan of industry. This world belongs to him. A smooth operator. Baritone.
[CODY] He/Him, 20s, Black. An activist. President Emeritus of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, University of Buffalo Chapter. Charismatic, charming, inspirational. Believes deeply in his cause and inspires others to do the same. Strong pop, R&B singer.
[BETTY/ENSEMBLE] She/Her, 20s, White. Cindy’s best friend from childhood. A blonde, most likely. A hopeless romantic. Think ‘Wife + Mother Barbie’. Pop singer and dancer. Will double as other roles throughout the show.
[GLORIA/ENSEMBLE] She/He, 20s, White. Cindy’s other best friend from childhood. A brunette, definitely. Dry as her martini. Will stay in her small town forever but isn’t too happy about it. Very pregnant. Pop singer and dancer. Will double as other roles throughout the show.
[SCOTTIE/ENSEMBLE] He/Him, 20s, BIPOC. A worker in the mail room at Cindy’s NYC advertising agency. He’s showing early signs of hippie-dom. Pop singer and dancer. Will double as other roles throughout the show.
[ANDY WARHOL/ENSEMBLE] He/Him, 30s-40s, White. Andy Warhol. Pop singer and dancer. Will double as other roles throughout the show.
[HATTIE/ENSEMBLE] She/Her, 20s, White. A bombshell secretary in Brian’s office. Represents Brian’s preferred ‘type’. Think Marilyn Monroe meets Joan from Mad Men. Pop singer and dancer. Will double as other roles throughout the show.
[ENSEMBLE] All genders and races/ethnicities. A small ensemble of strong singers and dancers who will play a variety of roles throughout the show.
