Breakdown

NEW YORK CLASSICAL THEATRE reinvigorates and creates audiences for the theatre by presenting free productions of popular classics and forgotten masterpieces that pop up in non-traditional public spaces throughout New York City.

It is imperative that we assemble an ETHNICALLY DIVERSE CAST. Actors of all ethnicities are strongly encouraged to attend the audition.

SEEKING:

THESEUS/OBERON
Male, 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Theseus: Duke of Athens, a regal, mature and strong leader with genuine affection for his subjects; engaged to Hippolyta. Oberon: King of the Fairies, powerful, jealous and mercurial; at odds with his Queen, Titania. Actor must move well and be a confident and accomplished singer.

HIPPOLYTA /TITANIA
Female, late 20s – 30s, any ethnicity. Hippolyta: Queen of the Amazons, regal, mature and outspoken; engaged to Theseus. Titania: Queen of the Fairies, proud, powerful and in conflict with Oberon, her King and (sometimes) lover. Actress must move well and be a confident and accomplished singer.

EGEUS/QUINCE/FAIRY
Male, 50s-60s, any ethnicity. Egeus: Courtier and Master of Ceremonies for Theseus; father to Hermia; a devout patriarch, furious that his daughter refuses to marry the man of his choice. Quince: a carpenter, the long-suffering and somewhat nervous leader of an amateur theatrical troupe; he always looks to Bottom for advice. Also plays a fairy in Titania’s court.

LYSANDER
Male, 20s, any ethnicity. Honest and forthright, in love with Hermia; he hatches the plan whereby he and Hermia flee Athens to elope.

DEMETRIUS
Male, 20s, any ethnicity. Fickle and impulsive; now in love with Hermia, though he most recently wooed Helena and has now turned his attention elsewhere.

HERMIA
Female, 20s, any ethnicity. Daughter of Egeus and in love with Lysander; strong and independent, with a sharp temper, she refuses to follow her father’s orders to marry Demetrius.

HELENA
Female, 20s, any ethnicity. Best friend of Hermia; morose, with low self-esteem, she is in love (obsessively) with Demetrius.

BOTTOM
Male, 30s-40s, any ethnicity. A weaver; easily offended, highly effusive, very theatrical, and the star actor of the amateur theatrical troupe—he has a giant ego.

SNUG/FAIRY
Male, 20s-40s, any ethnicity. A joiner and (somewhat unwilling) member of the amateur theatrical troupe; nervous and slow of speech; he is given the Lion’s part so as not to have to learn any lines. Doubles as a fairy in Titania’s court.

SNOUT/FAIRY
Male, 20s-40s, any ethnicity. A tinker and member of the amateur theatrical troupe. Dim-witted but eager; an honest and plain man, he is cast as a ‘wall’ in their play. Doubles as a fairy in Titania’s court.

FLUTE/FAIRY
Male, 18-early 20s, any ethnicity. A bellows-mender; a simple and unsophisticated young man; quite proud that his beard is just beginning to show; he is the newest member of the amateur theatrical troupe and cast, unwillingly, as a female (Thisbe) in their play. Doubles as a fairy in Titania’s court.

PUCK
Male or female, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Oberon’s servant and fiery jester; a fairy spirit and prankster with a love for chaos and the absurd. Actor must move well and be a confident and accomplished singer.
