Breakdown
Desiree Armfeldt – 40’s to 50’s; Alto; talk-singing is stylistically appropriate. She is a beautiful, desirable but maturing leading lady in a touring theatrical company. Worldly but not always wise. Her days as a leading lady are numbered but she still attracts the crowd and men. She was once Frederick’s mistress.
Frederick Egerman – 50’s; Baritone, A up to E above middle C. He is a successful, widowed lawyer who has married a much younger woman. He is tiring of the effort required to woo her and keep her content.
Madame Armfeldt – late 60’s to 70’s. Low alto; talk singing is stylistically appropriate. Desiree’s mother. A grande dame of a more refined era. She once numbered kings among her lovers. Now she cares for Desiree’s 14 year old daughter.
Henrik Egerman – 20’s; Tenor, needs sustained B below High C. Frederick’s son by his first wife. He is a somber, confused divinity student who plays the cello in times of stress.
Anne Egerman – late teens to early 20’s; Soprano to Ab. Frederick’s young wife. She is sometimes silly in her girlishness and cruel in her immaturity. She is pleased with the social position that her marriage has brought her, but not quite so pleased with her much older husband.
Fredericka – Desiree’s daughter. CAST
Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm – 30’s to 40’s; Baritone or Tenor, ranges to F above middle C. He is a wildly jealous dragoon whi is currently Desiree’s paramour.
Countess Charlotte Malcolm – 30’s; Mezzo to Alto (G below middle C to B above). Carl-Magnus’ long suffering wife. She is aware of her husband’s infidelity and alternates between humiliation and sarcasm.
Petra – 20’s; Solid belter, F# - B with a mix to Db. She is a warm blooded, provocative maid to the Egerman family. She is full of life and very aware of how attractive she is.
Frid – Madame Armfeldt’s silent but capable butler. Non-singing role. He is always there to pour coffee, to light a cigarette or to carry Madame of the room. Strong, sexy and a real presence.
Osa – Madame Armfeldt’s maid. Non-singing role.
Mr. Lindquist – Legit Baritone (solid down to a Ab)
Mrs. Nordstrom – Legit Soprano. Score includes a sustained E above high C.
Mrs. Andersen – Legit Soprano/Mezzo (to F).
Mr. Erlanson – Legit Tenor to Bb
Mrs. Segstrom – Legit Soprano/Mezzo to F
