BREAKDOWN
San Francisco. 1986. What could Harry, an amiable but lonely retired kosher butcher have in common with Barbara, his young lesbian writing teacher at the senior center? Is it enough to bridge the divide? When Harry fulfills a writing assignment to compose a letter to someone from his past who’s dead, he writes not to his late wife Frannie, but to Harvey Milk, the first openly gay political leader in California. Barbara is stunned. Harry's letter evokes life-changing revelations that neither could have foreseen. This musical — with its soaring score and deeply-felt, surprisingly funny lyrics — deals with issues of friendship and loss, the grip of the past, and the hard-won acceptance set in motion by the most unexpected people.
SEEKING:
HARRY WEINBERG
(Male. 50s-60s) He is a retired kosher butcher. Kindly, mischievous, uses humor to deflect any questions that hit too close to home. He has been through a lot more than he is ready to reveal. BARITONE.
FRANNIE WEINBERG
(Female. Late 50s) She is Harry’s wife. She is opinionated, with a biting sense of humor but with hidden reserves of affection. She is fiercely loyal to her husband. MEZZO SOPRANO. This role is cast.
BARBARA KATSEF
(Female. Late 20s – Early 30s) She is a writing teacher. She has many questions about her Jewish heritage, the answers to which she will doggedly pursue. A lesbian, but this is not immediately obvious. MEZZO/SOPRANO–BELT.
HARVEY MILK/WAITER
(Male. 30s-40s) He is not yet the historical figure he will become. He is funny, didactic, and argumentative. He knows the risk he’s taking by being the first openly gay politician. The Waiter is an archetypal Jewish deli waiter with a caustic sense of humor. TENOR/BARITONE.
YUSSL/SECOND WAITER
(Male. 20-25) Yussl is a brave, sensitive and somewhat effeminate Jewish gay man in a concentration camp. The Waiter is an archetypal Jewish deli waiter with a sense of humor. BARI-TENOR.
DAN WHITE/NAZI GUARD/THIRD WAITER
(Male. Early 30s) Dan is robust, all-American and violently homophobic. Nazi Guard is like a disdainful attack dog. The Waiter is an archetypal Jewish deli waiter with a sense of humor. LOW BARITONE/BARITONE.
THE LOVER
(Female. Mid to late 20’s-early 30’s) Open ethnicity. She is a proud, confident lesbian working in a women’s bookstore. MEZZO SOPRANO/SOPRANO.
