Breakdown
SEEKING:
NORA:
Female 25-30. The “Doll wife” of HELMER. Sexy and playful. Quick. Smart-witted. Strong. Loves her husband and children and her domestic life. Feels that she can maneuver the world, and is surprised, startled, and awakened when she learns she cannot – and that her marriage is not what she thought, nor her husband whom she thought he was. She finds it easy to take pleasure in people and things, and until shown otherwise thinks she really understands her life and those of others. She thinks through all decisions carefully, and though others may think she is gliding on the surface, she is always weighing options, thinking steps ahead. Very bright and alive, and committed to a fundamental honesty within herself.
HELMER:
Male, 30-35. Ambitious and professional, he works hard and is starting to be rewarded for his labors. Aspiring to upper middle class, he believes in a world where morals are cleanly delineated, as are roles, and there are no grey areas in either. Loves his wife, his home. Feels he is always doing the right thing and is always above reproach. Has a wonderful sexuality and feels the luckiest man on earth having married Nora, whom he enjoys in every way. He is stunned to learn that the world does not operate as he assumes it will, and that he is not in control when he was always certain he was. He worries greatly about appearances, in part because his ambitions are so great to rise above his own station.
MRS. LINDE:
Female, 25-30. NORA’s childhood friend. A woman who has always had to pay a price for everything, but is not bitter, simply wishing for a change in her own circumstances. Attractive, but modest as there is no room nor time nor money to enjoy her own self. Through the journey of the play she discovers that the grass is not always greener, and she can make the tough choices and say the honest word when it is needed.
DR. RANK:
Male, 30s-40s. HELMER’s best friend, and neighbor. A medical doctor. Unconcerned about what others think of him. Flirtatious, and comfortable in himself, he has an ease in the world and a kind of privilege that Helmer does not. Ultimately, he loves being the third wheel in the Helmer home, loves the easy intimacy he has with both Torvald and Nora, being slightly in love with both of them, while being able to keep to himself when he wishes. Deeply private, he is able to show a gracious side while keeping most of his secrets and true feelings only to himself.
KROGSTAD:
Male 30-40. Has worked at the bank with Helmer. A good man who has had to endure too many challenges to stay on the straight and narrow. If he intimidates, it is out of need not out of desire, and understands that in the society he lives in he must fight for everything. Nothing comes easy. Were it not for his children needing him he very well might be a far more depressed and despairing soul – but being needed makes him fight. He sees clearly through the hypocrisies around him. Has buried his love for Mrs. Linde so deep that he has forgotten he can feel love at all – until he does, and then, it is a deep, real, passionate commitment that emerges.
