The Citadel Theatre Receives Funding From Government Of Alberta

The Government of Alberta has just announced that The Citadel Theatre Renewal Project will receive new capital funding as part of Budget 2023 Capital Plan, necessary for much needed upgrades and improvements to the building.

Built in three phases in the 1970s and 80s, The Citadel Theatre maintains and operates a massive (170,000 sq ft) facility in Edmonton's Downtown Arts District, in which over 100,000 community members visit in a standard year. As such, the Citadel Theatre is facing multiple and ongoing issues related to ageing, failing infrastructure that is almost 40 years old.

Our project scope is diverse and covers many different parts of our facility. Some of the projects are basic remediation and are "simple fixes" such as flooring replacement, while some are much more significant including elevator upgrades, replacing window glazing and skylights and mechanical systems.

As part of The Citadel Theatre's Renewal Project, the $4 million we will receive in Budget 2023 Capital Plan funding will go towards improving accessibility and access in the building to ensure all patrons, staff and artists have a barrier-free experience at The Citadel. This includes renovating washrooms and adding stairlifts to increase accessibility, and renovating the flexible hospitality venue (the restaurant space on the main floor of the facility).

The total budget of the renovations needed is $16,750,000 and this new funding is a great start in beginning the planned projects, as we continue to collaborate with other funders and supporters to invest in the future of The Citadel Theatre. All projects are shovel-ready and we will proceed once all funding is in place.
