Review: MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY Sweeps Edmonton off its Feet Image

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune and a young woman of a pedantic disposition make the most charming of romantic pairs. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley revisits the world of Jane Austen's most beloved classic, inviting audiences to join its famous family for a Yuletide gathering like no other.

Set two years after the marriage of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, Christmas at Pemberley is a winsome comedy brimming with zest, sisterly shenanigans, and a winning unlikely romance. The superb cast breathes life into Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon's buoyant script, painting an irresistible portrait of love and friendship against the lavish but cozy backdrop of the Darcy's festive sitting room.

However, unlike its inspiration, the production turns the spotlight from the spirited Elizabeth (Allison Edwards-Crewe) to illuminate the ever-scholastic Mary (Mikaela Davies). While her sisters bask in wedded bliss, Mary's prickly exterior falters in the imposing library's solitude. Despite reveling in written words and contemplation, her rigid exterior masks a longing for companionship and an even deeper desire to be understood. This resolve is further tested by the arrival of the dashing Arthur de Bourgh (Umed Amin), a cousin of Mr. Darcy's and an aspiring Oxford scholar.

As the two romantic leads, Davies and Amin are captivating as outsiders navigating the uncharted waters of new love. Their chemistry is palpable from their very first meeting, endearing them to the audience with their longing glances and social missteps as they come to terms with their own affections. These newfound feelings are as much a novelty as the sitting room's towering Christmas tree, and it isn't long before the entire household conspires to get them together.

The supporting cast is equally delightful to watch, adding additional depth to Austen's iconic characters. Allison Davies-Crewe brings warmth and effervescence to the role of Elizabeth Darcy, Emma Laishram is poised and elegant as expectant mother Jane, and Emma Houghton displays impeccable comedic timing as the overly flirtatious Lydia. Rounding out the cast are Mathew Hulshof as the famously reserved Mr. Darcy and Cameron Kneteman as the amiable Mr. Bingley, who share unique humour and effortless brotherly banter. Together, the family simultaneously plays Cupid, attempting to thwart unwelcome houseguest and rival Anne (Gianna Vacirca) and bring Mary and de Bourgh together at last.

A celebration of sparkling wit and romance, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley is the perfect way to ring in the holidays for ardent Austen fans and enchanted newcomers alike.

It runs at the Citadel's Shoctor Theatre until December 9.
