Matrix Theatre Presents 'Speak Out – With Art' and Improvisation-Based Camps for Summer 2017

Matrix Theatre Company announces summer programming with Summer Creativity Camps housed at its theatre in Detroit, and improvisation-based camps hosted at partner location, Go Comedy! Improv Theater in Ferndale.

"Speak Out - With Art" Summer Creativity Camps for youth ages 8 - 14, running June 26 through July 21 at Matrix Theatre Company, give budding artists the opportunity to enhance their communication and performance skills and experiment with sharing their voice through creative writing, music, movement, drama, and visual arts. Camps are segmented into sessions according to campers' ages and are led by highly-trained artists-in-residence. Each session culminates in a cabaret-style performance of the campers design. "Go Youth!" Summer Camps for youth entering grades 4 - 12 and recent high school graduates run July 10 through August 4 at Go Comedy! Improv Theater in Ferndale. Camps are segmented into one-week sessions according to campers' ages and will focus on building basic improvisation skills and performance games with an emphasis on listening, teamwork, and support. These camps are led by Matrix teaching artists and each session culminates in a final performance for family and friends. More information is available at www.gocomedy.net.

"I am always fascinated when I see the final performance for each age group and program", said Colleen Cartwright, Matrix's Director of Education. "Each unique production is molded from the collective ideas and creative vision of the students within that specific group. It is a fine line we walk here at Matrix, as artists and teachers, to provide the structure needed to advance the fundamental skills of playwriting and performance in our students while also providing a safe space for them to collectively explore their own thoughts, experiences, voices and creative process. The artists we choose to lead these classes understand the importance of both."

Cost is $200 per child.

Returning campers save $10 off the regular price of tuition. An early bird discount of $10 off the regular price of tuition is available when campers are registered by June 5, 2017.

Camps are taught by instructors from Matrix Theatre Company. The instructors all have a background in children's theater, and experience working with students of all levels and abilities.
