Laurie Rubin, a blind singer who challenged the norm and beat the odds is performing at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 22.
Rubin is not only a famous mezzo-soprano, but also the celebrated author of Do You Dream in Color whose concert combines song and storytelling in a unique performance that should not be missed. She is a shining example for all people that with true inner strength and determination, one can change the world in a beautiful way.
Rubin has performed the title role in Rossini's La Cenerentola, Karen in Gordon Beeferman's The Rat Land with New York City Opera, Penelope in Monteverdi's The Return of Ulysses at the Greenwich Music Festival, and is currently playing the role of Voice/Witch in Lisa Bielawa's award-winning made-for-broadcast episodic opera, Vireo. Rubin has graced some of the world's most prominent stages including The John F. Kennedy Center, The White House,
Carnegie Hall, and Wigmore Hall in London.
In 2013, Ms. Rubin embarked on a national tour performing musical selections paired with excerpts from her memoir which details her story of growing up blind, coupled with the growing pains of adolescence and her unique career ascendance in the world of classical music and opera.
New York Times critic
Anthony Tommasini praised her "compelling artistry, communicative power" and the "earthy, rich and poignant qualities" of her voice.
