Disney Theatrical Productions and the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines announced today that tickets for the long-awaited return engagement of Disney's THE LION KING will go on sale to the public on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 at 10 a.m. THE LION KING premiered in Des Moines in March 2006, selling out its entire 5-week run. Des Moines' most eagerly awaited return will once again leap onto the Civic Center stage on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010 for its first preview performance and will play for three weeks through Sunday, Jan. 24. The official opening night is Friday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. This North American Tour is currently one of seven productions running worldwide along with New York, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Paris, and a new sit-down production in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Theatre.

Tickets for THE LION KING go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 at the Civic Center Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster locations, charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000 and online at CivicCenter.org. Groups of 20 or more should call (515) 246-2321.

Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, THE LION KING continues to reign as one of the most popular shows on Broadway and around the world. Now in its 12th year, the global phenomenon is the winner of more than 70 major awards worldwide, including the 1998 Tony Award® and NY Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, the 1999 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album, and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design. The show has been seen by over 50 million people in 13 different countries (US, Canada, UK, Japan, Germany, Holland, France, Mexico, Australia, China, Taiwan, South Africa and Korea). In addition to Broadway and a North American tour, THE LION KING can also be seen on stage in London, Hamburg, Paris, Tokyo and Las Vegas in a new sit-down production at Mandalay Bay Theatre.

Director Julie Taymor became the first woman in Broadway history to win the Tony® Award for Best Director of a Musical. Taymor, along with Michael Curry, created hundreds of masks and puppets for THE LION KING. Choreography is by Garth Fagan, scenic design is by Richard Hudson, costume design is by Julie Taymor and lighting design is by Donald Holder. The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated film and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay for THE LION KING. The score features Elton John and Tim Rice's music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer.

Ticket prices start as low as $22.50. Additionally, Premium Ticket Packages, which include a prime seat location, a commemorative souvenir program and an exclusive merchandise item, are also available. Beginning Monday, Oct. 26, tickets will be available at the Civic Center Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, and online at CivicCenter.org. The Des Moines engagement of THE LION KING is presented by arrangement with the Civic Center and is special presentation of the Willis Broadway Series.
