May offers another month of excellent entertainment opportunities at multiple venues in the Des Moines area.
Hot on the heels of the run of Memphis at the Civic Center, Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles plays for two nights only May 15th and 16th. Rain will truly take the audience back to the time when John, Paul, George, and Ringo ruled the rock ‘n’ roll world because it offers not only the music but the look and feel as well. StageWest and Drake University are jointly producing Best Musical Tony winner Spring Awakening at the Civic Center’s Stoner Theater. Spring Awakening garnered raves when it debuted and the coming of age story about teenagers in 19th century Germany continues to strike a chord with audiences. The limited run will open May 3rd and run through May 6th with a matinee performance on Saturday. For ticket information visit http://www.civiccenter.org/
The Improvised Shakespeare Company will round out the Temple Theater Series May 9 – 20. The Company takes audiences suggestions to create an improvised play in Elizabethan style. Each night will offer a different play and even the most adamantly anti-Shakespeare crowd will revel in the comedic possibilities. For ticket information go to http://www.civiccenter.org/
The Tallgrass Theatre Company’s Sylvia Rep continues through May 13. The Sylvia Rep is Tallgrass’ first repertory production and it features Sylvia and The Goat Or, Who is Sylvia? For ticket information visit http://www.tallgrasstheatre.org/
Since you will probably have to pay a babysitter to see any of those shows, I’m happy to report there are a couple shows running in May for the whole family. The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley will be staged at the Des Moines Community Playhouse’s Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre May 4 – 20. For ticket information go to http://www.dmplayhouse.com/
The Civic Center’s Family Series also offers fun for the whole family with the Golden Dragon Acrobats on May 19th. The pre-show discovery party offers art activities, demonstrations, and other programs for kids. For ticket information visit http://www.civiccenter.org/
