Janis Ian
Part of the Iowa Women's Music Festival
September 10 at 8 PM

Who are the great songwriters in America today? Not the most popular. Not the richest. Simply the greats. Ask any student of the form, and Janis Ian will be counted among them. The writer of "Jesse," a song recorded by so many others that few remember Ian wrote it; "Stars," possibly the best song ever written about the life of a performer, recorded by artists as diverse as Mel Torme and Cher; and the seminal "At Seventeen", a song that brought her five Grammy nominations (the most any solo female artist had ever garnered) in 1975, and which is now reaching its third generation of listeners. Ian is a formidable talent, a force of nature. Ella Fitzgerald once called her "The best young singer in America."

An Evening with Judy Collins
September 14 at 8 PM

Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folk songs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years. At 13, Judy Collins made her public debut performing Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos but it was the music of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked Judy's love of lyrics. In 1961, Judy Collins released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22 and began a thirty-five year association with Jac Holzman and Elektra Records. She interpreted the songs of fellow artists - particularly the social poets of the time such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton. Judy Collins is also noted for her rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" on her 1967 album, Wildflowers which has since been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. She won "Song of the Year" at the 1975 Grammy Awards for her version of "Send in the Clowns," from the Broadway musical "A Little Night Music."

An Evening with Steve Earle and the Dukes (and Duchesses) featuring Allison Moorer
September 19 at 8 PM

In the strictest sense, Steve Earle isn't a country artist, he is a roots rocker. Earle emerged in the mid-'80s, after Bruce Springsteen had popularized populist rock & roll and Dwight Yoakam had kick-started the neo-traditionalist movement in country music. At first, Earle appeared to be more toward the rock side than country. He played stripped-down neo-rockabilly that occasionally verged on outlaw country. His unwillingness to conform to the rules of Nashville or to rock & roll meant that he never broke into the mainstream. Instead, he cultivated a dedicated cult following, drawing from both country and rock audiences. He remains an vital element in contemporary American music.

The MiLes Davis Experience 1949 - 1959: A Collaboration with Blue Note Records
Featuring the Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet
September 29 at 8 PM

The MiLes Davis Experience: 1949-1959 recaptures the sound, historical, and cultural context of a critical period in American History through the lens of jazz music and its most iconic innovator, MiLes Davis. Sanctioned by Blue Note Records and featuring Blue Note artist Ambrose Akinmusire, this intriguing tour provides a great opportunity to reintroduce Miles to a younger audience and those unfamiliar with his legacy. It also gives his large fan base a chance to experience and celebrate his music in a new live setting. The show includes live music performed in the manner it was first presented, with era photos and film clips brought together by a beat poet-style narrator.
