The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents the Tony Award nominated musical, "West Side Story," Oct. 7-30, 2016. Tickets may be purchased online atdmplayhouse.com, by phone at 515-277-6261, or at The Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St. "West Side Story" is sponsored by The Principal Financial Group.

"Romeo and Juliet" takes to the streets of New York City where two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, fight for supremacy. But when a former Jet, Tony (Rocco Contini), falls in love with Maria (Kirsten Brown), the sister of a Shark, the rivalry turns deadly. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is considered one of Broadway's finest - part of the nation's musical heritage.

The Playhouse cast includes Isaac Anderson, Kyra Berg, Chris Bernard, Erin Besser, Nick Black, Jennie Coletta, Will Donaghy, Mitch Donohue, Demarius Fisher, Tiffany Flory, Nick Flynn, Megan Gilbreath, John Graham, Molly Hackman, Tyler Hackman, Allison Heckart, Karla Heflin, Serena Hilton, Adam Jackson, Jaxon Koehler, Allissa Magill, Sofi Mandil, Gary McCall, Brent Nery, Elliott Newman, Mitchell Nieland, Gary Roberts, Andrew Rubenbauer, Marisa Spahn, Alexandra C. Stark, and Marguerite Wildermuth. "West Side Story" is directed and choreographed using the original Jerome Robbins choreography by Karla Kash, with musical direction by Brenton Brown.

The Playhouse is one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the US. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
