The Des Moines Community Playhouse Play Reading Series presents Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's "boom," 7:00 PM, Monday, Feb. 2. The evening is free; beverages will be available for purchase.
"boom" follows a mysterious journalism student after he's lured to a subterranean research lab by a grad student's online personal ad, "Sex to Change the Course of the World," under the pretense of an evening of "no strings attached" sex. But when a major global catastrophic event strikes the planet, their date takes on evolutionary significance and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Will they survive? What about the fish in the tank? And who is that woman pulling levers and playing the timpani? An epic and intimate comedy that spans over billions of years, "boom" explores the influences of fate versus randomness in the course of one's life, and life as we know it on the planet.
"boom" is directed by Cedric Fevrier. The cast includes Lauren Kacere, David Kaniuk Jr., and Cynthia Mercati.
The play reading series is held one night each month on the stage in the theatre's upper lobby. Actors read from scripts; there are no costumes or scenery pieces. The goal of the play reading series is to offer audiences and volunteers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with upcoming productions, as well as offer insight into new scripts and possible titles to be mounted in the future.
Upcoming titles in the 2014-15 Play Reading Series Season include "God's Ear" by Jenny Schwartz, Mar. 2; and "The Velvet Sky" by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Apr. 6.
The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
