Auditions for the holiday show "Elf - The Musical" will be held at 6:30 P.M. on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018. Due to construction at the theatre, auditions will be held at West Des Moines Christian Church, 4501 Mills Civic Pkwy., West Des Moines. All auditions are open to the public; no one is pre-cast. Those auditioning must bring a prepared solo; an accompanist will be provided as well as the ability to play an accompaniment from an iPhone or a similar device. Questions about auditions should be directed to Robin Spahr, 515-974-5365.

"Elf - The Musical" contains speaking roles for 7 men, 3 women, 1 boy age 12-16, and an ensemble of men and women, ages 12 and up. Performances are Nov. 30-Dec. 23, 2018, with school matinees Dec. 10-11. Where race, ethnicity, gender, age, or other personal differentiations are not specified by the script, the Playhouse casts plays without regard to these attributes, and actively encourages participation by all members of the community. "Elf - The Musical" is directed by Maxwell Schaeffer with music direction by Brenton Brown and choreography by Megan Helmers.

Based on the 2003 film, "Elf - The Musical" tells the story of Buddy, a human raised as an elf at the North Pole. Buddy's enormous size and poor toy-making skills soon make him realize he's not fit to live at the North Pole. Buddy travels to New York City where he learns his dad doesn't believe in Santa Claus! The Playhouse production is the regional debut of this modern Christmas classic.

The Playhouse is one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the US. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
