Celebrate the holidays with the Des Moines Community Playhouse and a journey to once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away with the family musical Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella," Dec. 10-23. Tickets may be purchased at The Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St.; by phone at 515-277-6261; and online at dmplayhouse.com. Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella" is sponsored by Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield.

The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance.

The Playhouse cast of 23 tells the story of Cinderella (Janae Hohbein), her stepmother (Victoria Daniels), her awkward stepsister, Grace (Sarah Brammer), and her sullen stepsister, Joy (Danika Portz). With the help of her Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Lee), Cinderella spends a magical evening at the ball with the charming Prince Christopher (James Kolnik).

The "Cinderella" score contains such Rodgers & Hammerstein charmers as "In My Own Little Corner," "Impossible," "Ten Minutes Ago," and "A Lovely Night." Adapted for the stage with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.

"Cinderella" is directed by Kathy Pingel, with music direction by Eric Shepard and choreography by Alison Shafer.

Originally presented on television in 1957 and starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella" was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
