The Des Moines Community Playhouse Performance Academy presents "Aladdin Kids," Mar. 16-17, 2018. Tickets may be purchased online at dmplayhouse.com, by phone at 515-277-6261, and at the Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St.

"Aladdin Kids" is a 35-minute version of the popular stage and film musical, adapted to suit young voices. When the street urchin, Aladdin, vies for the attention of the beautiful princess, Jasmine, he uses a genie's magic power to become a prince in order to marry her. Iago, Jafar, and more are here in a musical adventure filled with magic and mayhem.

During Spring Break week, the 40 students, representing 21 elementary and middle schools, are rehearsing 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. By the end of the week, they will have learned their lines, dances, songs, and blocking for the featured production, "Aladdin Kids." They will then have two shows, 5:00 PM, Friday, Mar. 16, and 1:00 PM, Saturday, Mar. 17, that are open to the public. The show is directed by Greg Millar, with music direction by Robin Spahr and choreography by Katie Dorrell.

The Playhouse Performance Academy is young people creating shows, under the direction of professional artistic staff, and complete with set pieces, costumes, and props, to be seen by families. Open to students in grades 3-8, Performance Academy provides an opportunity for young people to work on performance skills.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
