For young people who love theatre, the Des Moines Community Playhouse offers three winter break workshops and three seven-week winter class sessions. For registration and more information, contact the Playhouse education department at 515-974-5365 or visit dmplayhouse.com.

Students in grades 5-8 will have the opportunity to learn important theatrical makeup skills in Makeup 101, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, Wednesday, Dec. 23. First and second graders can explore, create, and act out stories in the Winter Wonderland workshop 9:00 AM-4:00 PM daily, Dec. 28-30. Finally, students in grades 3-7 can hone in on audition, rehearsal, and performance skills by creating A Play in Three Days, also 9:00 AM-4:00 PM each day, Dec. 28-30.

For the eighth consecutive year, the Playhouse is offering musical theatre classes. In response to requests, the class session has increased from five to seven weeks. In this winter class session, Saturdays, Jan. 9-Feb. 20, the halls of the Playhouse are filled with the voices of young performers, kindergarten through sixth grade.

Broadway Lullabies, Broadway Bound, and Broadway Stars will be the next step for the young people of Des Moines on their journey toward Broadway. Students learn show tunes and scenes that come alive with choreography and acting technique in a fun yet professional atmosphere. During the final class, students present a showcase for family and friends.

The Playhouse is one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the US. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
