A comedy about being stuck in a tragedy with your annoying unicorn friend and a handful of
imaginary spoons.
The Menagerist is a satire involving all of the characters from Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie. It questions the portrayal of disabled characters and playfully offers alternatives. Buntport Theater Company has been creating new work in Denver for 25 years. In that time, they were lucky enough to become friends with Regan Linton, an accomplished actor/creator, disability activist, and former Artistic Director of Phamaly. The Menagerist marks a home-coming for Linton as she tackles the part of Laura once again in her career. In Williams's original play Laura is meek and lonely. In The Menagerist she is finally trying to create a new narrative, while still surrounded by her overbearing mother, her mopey brother, her dubious gentleman caller, and her collection of glass animals (in particular a large, combative unicorn). Buntport's long history of adapting and corrupting classic literature combined with Linton's experience creating new work via a disability lens have resulted in a wild comedy that turns a questioning eye on their medium of choice.
This production is made possible, in part, by the Foundation for Systemic Change and the
DAV Arts and Culture Fund.
