It all began with the 1976 cult classic film of the same name, written and directed by Alan Parker. The film, known for its all-child cast portraying adult gangsters, was a tongue-in-cheek homage to 1920s gangster flicks. Parker, seeing the comedic potential on stage, adapted the film's script and Paul Williams' catchy score into a stage musical.
The musical adaptation premiered in London's West End in 1983 at Her Majesty's Theatre. Directed by Michael Dolenz, of The Monkees fame, the production was a hit, running for 300 performances. Notably, a young Catherine Zeta-Jones played the sassy songstress Tallulah in this production.
