If you like musicals, you will like the latest show (and for that matter the whole summer season) to debut on the stage of the Butte Theater in Cripple Creek.

Godspell, a 1970’s classic, is a series of parables based on the Gospel of Matthew interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns.

Godspell is an archaic spelling of the word gospel, and so, true to form, the play is filled with a series of stories, challenges and life situations, ending with the crucifixion.

Featuring David Craven, the teacher and Saviour, the show consists of a simple set, carefully and artistically lighted for each scene, and one set of costumes. Actors Mel Moser, Kevin Finch, Nick Madson, Cassandra Nuss, Shannon McMillan, Casiena Raether and Laurie Sutton act out the parables and stories, some set to music, with Craven as their guiding light.

Directed and choreographed by Lysa Fox, the show is a fast-paced workout for the cast, who not only speak their lines and sing solo and chorus, but also dance their way around the set.

This same set of actors changes hats every other show and performs The Fantasticks now through Sept. 26.

Cripple Creeks’ Butte Theater offers family fun in an historic setting amidst a variety of restaurants and casinos. The summer season includes Godspell as well as The Fantasticks. The two shows will rotate alternating days and times (1 and 7 p.m.) through Sept. 26. This year the new schedule includes more matinees and an additional day of Monday matinees. The theater will be open Wednesday through Monday, closed only on Tuesdays, providing a variety of times and days to meet any schedule.

Group bookings and season tickets are available for all four 2009 Thin Air Theatre Company shows - two popular musicals, The Fantasticks and Godspell , an all new classic melodrama, The Last Soul of Cripple Creek, and a popular Butte original – A Cripple Creek Christmas Carol. The traditional classic melodrama, a long time Cripple Creek favorite outing, has moved to October, followed by a Halloween Olio.

Ticket prices are: $15.75 Adult; $13.75 Senior; $9.75 Children;  $12.75 for groups of 20-plus.
