The story of Sarah Jean Carter, who has returned from Detroit to her childhood home of Monroe County in order to attend the funeral of Uncle Jed, her favorite relative.
She meets a spirited girl who turns out to be her childhood self. They embark on a journey that is more than a romp through the past.
In 1928, Uncle Jed was the only black barber in Monroe County. His barber shop was everywhere: on porches, in fields of share crop land, and in kitchens beside pot-bellied stoves.
Sarah Jean and her uncle share adventures on moonlight picnics, frolics to catch fireflies and lessons learned from precious but illusive pennies as Uncle Jed struggles to one day open up his very own barber shop.
