Spark Theater presents the Regional Premiere of The Gut Girls by Sarah Daniels, directed by Maru Garcia, October 18 through November 9, 2013. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast below!
Set in the "gutting" sheds at cattle market in late Victorian England, this drama shows working women at the bottom of the heap. When socially conscious "do-gooders" seek to make their unseemly work illegal, the "gut girls" are forced to seek other options.
The cast includes Miranda LeQuire (Maggie, Nora, Edna), Cristina "Kiso" Kyle(Polly), Amy Shaffner (Ellen), Kati Oltyan (Priscilla), Katie Swisher (Annie, Emily, Eady), Alicia C. Leeper (Kate), Judy Wolf (Lady Helena), Dustin M. Carlson (Arthur, Jim), Bill Thompson (Len, Harry) and Carmine DePaulo (Edwin, Madjacko).
Playwright Sarah Daniels wrote "The Gut Girls" based on the true story of a group of women who work in the slaughterhouses in London in the early1900's. The women were relegated to removing the entrails of the slaughtered beasts, hence their catchy nickname.
Daniels has been a prolific writer since her first performed play was given a production at the Royal Court in 1981. She won the London Critics Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright for her play "Masterpieces" and the George Devine Award for "Neaptide." Her plays have been published in the Methuem World Classics series (Aston). She has also written episodes of the soap-operas "Grange Hill" and EastEnders.
The show runs October 18 through November 9 at 985 Santa Fe Drive in Denver, CO 80204. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday's @ 7:30 p.m. October 18 through November 9. *No shows on October 31 and November 1.
