Evergreen Players presents Neil Siomon's BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS currently playing through November 6 at Center/Stage in Evergreen, CO. Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York in 1937, a Jewish family experiences ups and downs as they encounter everything from financial concerns to the mounting uncertainty surrounding their loved-ones overseas. This coming-of-age comedy focuses on Eugene Morris Jerome, a Polish-Jewish American teenager who experiences puberty, sexual awakening, and a search for identity as he tries to deal with his family, including his older brother Stanley, his parents Kate and Jack, and Kate's sister Blanche and her two daughters, Nora and Laurie, who come to live there after their father's death.
The cast, under the direction of Tony Catanese, consists of Jacqueline Archdeacon as Nora, Pele Capparo as Blanche, Jackson Garke as Eugene, Joe LaFollette as Stanley, Ken Paul as Jack, Arianna Sutton as Laurie and Michele Wright as Kate.
During 1966 Neil Simon had four shows playing in Broadway theaters at the same time: Sweet Charity, The Star-Spangled Girl, The Odd Couple, and Barefoot in the Park. His professional association with producer Emanuel Azenberg began with The Sunshine Boys during 1972 and continued with The Good Doctor, God's Favorite, Chapter Two, They're Playing Our Song, I Ought to Be in Pictures, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Biloxi Blues, Broadway Bound, Jake's Women, The Goodbye Girl, and Laughter on the 23rd Floor, among others. Simon also has written screenplays for more than twenty films and received four Academy Award nominations. He won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Lost in Yonkers. His numerous Broadway successes have caused his work to be amongst the most regularly performed in the world.
