About the Show: "One Death, Please?" is about a young pop-star named Olive Warren who seems to have it all, however no amount of fame or stardom can make her truly happy. Warren decides enough is enough and sets out to take her own life with the help of an assisted suicide clinic run by Daniel and Erin Muscarelli. However, just like her Hollywood lifestyle, Warren soon finds out that nothing is truly as it seems. This smart new work is equal parts funny and captivating while shining a harsh spotlight on the brutality of the popular media.
"I think it is vitally important to support new and original works of art, especially when it's something created by someone within the local community," offers Director
Patrick Brownson. "That's why I'm so excited to get to guide
Christian Munck's new play to the stage, and the fact that it's a wickedly funny script with an abundance of strong characters is just a bonus!"
Three Questions with the playwright.
Christian Munck:
Q: What's the play about?
Christian Munck: "One Death, Please?" is centrally a critique of the media culture we swim through. It can be art, it can be politics, but what gets us excited is that red meat of a genuine scandal or tragedy. We pinpoint the scandal down to one individual but it becomes a much messier image when one is forced to realize how many other lives are affected, we can see carnage is not always a physical condition.
Q: What inspired you to write it?
CM: I tease myself with different theories, but I think at the end of the day the script was kind of a personal journey into discovering a more mature and confident artist. I began writing this piece at a time where I was realizing the theatre can be a source of nourishment for a soul, or it can a treacherous and painful climb through limp imaginations and bitter opinions, and the dual nature began to be rather intimidating. So playing out some of these challenges with exaggerated characters, who are mostly removed into other realms of entertainment, I think became a form of role playing for how I was going to tackle my career.
Q: What is the biggest take away you want people to remember about the show?
CM: Well I think my first goal has to be to hold attention and entertain honestly, and let the deeper ideas come secondary to the audience who wants them. The truth of this piece lies in personal worth and the personal goals we set. Your goals can't be set by those around you, no matter how much you might respect, be inspired, or even plain jealous of other's achievements. It's a recipe for loneliness and disillusion. Or Cannibalism.
