The picturesque festival in the mountains of Colorado offers an unspoiled summer destination for bluegrass, opera, classical music, dance, children's programs, and more. CBMF's 21st Season, entitled "Identity Unmasked," will explore identity and its revelation or masking. The second week of programming features bluegrass band Taarka on June 30 and sees the return of dance programming to CBMF with the Davis Contemporary Dance Company on July 1. Members of the Opera Studio will also offer performances at the Union Congregational Church and as part of Sound Hearth, a concert series hosted at private residences throughout Crested Butte.

Performances from June 30-July 5:

Taarka

Friday, June 30, 2017 | 7:30 PM

General Admission Tickets: $25 | Purchase online at crestedbuttemusicfestival.org or call 970.349.0619

Led by the husband-and-wife team of David Pelta-Tiller (mandolin, tenor guitar, vocals) and Enion Pelta-Tiller (five-string violin, vocals) Taarka fills out its unique sound with award-winning bassist Troy Robey and prodigious young guitarist Mike Robinson, Taarka is bringing their otherworldly, energetic music to venues across the US, Canada, Europe, and Mexico.

David, a versatile picker raised in Virginia on a steady diet of bluegrass, Celtic, classical and Gypsy jazz, and Enion Pelta-Tiller, an award-winning classically-trained violinist who can switch seamlessly between Bartok and bebop (not to mention Gypsy jazz, punk, rock, bluegrass) began their journey together in 2001. After meeting at a Brooklyn Browngrass gig, the two began a Gypsy jazz busker act in the New York City subway before hitting the road as Taarka.

Taarka's live shows strike a balance between well-crafted songs and spirited instrumentals, expanding on its beginnings as a purely instrumental string band putting a modern spin on Gypsy and Eastern European folk music.

More about the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace:

One of only four such structures in the U.S., the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace is a semi-permanent Spiegeltent that will house all of the CBMF mainstage concerts. Flemish for "mirror tents," Spiegeltents were built around 1900 in Belgium for use as traveling dance halls and town fairs. The Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace is nicknamed "Victoria" and was originally built in the 1930s by the Klessens family. The numerous spiegels, or mirrors, in the tent allowed for discreet eye contact between visitors and became a legendary symbol of the wild fin-de-siècle nightlife. This tent has traveled around the world and most recently spent ten years in South Africa. In addition to housing the Festival events, the Tent is available for special events and rentals.

About the Crested Butte Music Festival:

The 2017 season offers an array of performances over seven weeks from June to August in classical music, Gypsy jazz, dance, opera, and more. Through CBMF's guest artists, residents and visitors of Gunnison County have access to performances and educational opportunities that would typically only be available in a major metropolitan area. CBMF offers educational programming and events for all ages, many of which are free or presented with a voluntary donation. Tickets are now on sale at crestedbuttemusicfestival.org.
