Boulder's Local Theater Company Announces 2018/19 Season

Local Theater Company will open is eighth season of professional theater in Boulder, Colorado, with the world premiere of "Paper Cut" by Andrew Rosendorf at the Dairy Arts Center on October 17, 2018. An audience favorite earlier this spring during the company's annual new play festival, the show explores the toll of war on a soldier returning home an amputee after an IED explosion.

Pesha Rudnick (Eve Ensler's O.P.C. at American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, The Firestorm at Local Theater Company) directs. The production will feature Sommer Carbuccia, who has workshopped the play with the playwright since its development. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

The theater company will also produce the world premiere of a new musical, Discount Ghost Stories, written by Alexander Sage Oyen and Jessica Kahkoska, who is originally from Colorado Springs. The show transforms true historical tales of life, death, and the beyond into a musical experience perfect for a summer night under the stars at Trident Booksellers and Café. The production begins June 6, 2019.

This is the first time Local has developed and produced a new American musical.

The 2018/19 season will also include the return of Local Lab, Boulder's premier new play festival that has developed shows that have gone onto regional and national acclaim off-Broadway and at some of the country's most reputable region theaters. The festival will run March 15-17, 2019 at Dairy Arts Center.

"Our new season continues our commitment to produce world premieres that are diverse and character-driven," said Pesha Rudnick, founding artistic director. "Andrew Rosendorf's 'Paper Cut' examines what it is like for a soldier to return home from war a very different person-a person grappling with what it means to be a man. 'Discount Ghost Stories,' on the other hand, is a wickedly fun new musical that will be performed outside under the stars at one of Boulder's oldest and coolest bookstores."

This season, Local will once again produce a series of free special events in support of their season. On November 3, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Wood, internationally known for his coverage of war and conflict around the world for more than 35 years, will talk about his book "What Have We Done: The Moral Injury of Our Longest Wars" at 3pm at the Dairy Arts Center. Wood's book served as inspiration for "Paper Cut."

This season, businesses from across the community have stepped up to support Local, an Actor's Equity Association Small Professional Theater that has experienced rapid audience growth over the past two seasons. In addition to the partnership with Trident Booksellers and Café, 2018/19 sponsors include The Millstone Evans Group of Raymond James, Whole Family Dentistry, Frasca Food and Wine, Embassy Suites Boulder, Todd Reed, and more. Boulder Arts Commission and Scientific and Cultural Facilitation District provide additional support.

Local Theater Company's mission is to discover, develop and produce new American plays. Recent productions have included the "Wisdom From Everything," "The Rape of the Sabine Women, By Grace B. Matthias" (2018 Henry Award for Best Director), and "The Firestorm."
