On September 16th Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (BETC) will launch its 12th season of producing Colorado's best contemporary theatre by presenting the regional premiere of The Revolutionists by Lauren Gunderson, and directed by Allison Watrous.

Gunderson, who also wrote last season's Silent Sky, has quickly become one of the most prolific and important voices in American theatre. Last year, she was named by American Theatre magazine as "The Most-Produced Living Playwright in America" on the strength of 16 productions of her work during the 2016-17 season.

"Lauren is quite simply one of my favorite writers. She is one of the freshest and most evocative voices in American theatre today. Her unique blend of humor, history, and dramatic storytelling makes her work a feast for the head and the heart," said Stephen Weitz, BETC's Producing Artistic Director and co-founder.

The Revolutionists is a comedy set during the Reign of Terror in 1790's France, and weaves together the stories of four historical women: Olympe De Gouge, Marianne Angelle, Charlotte Corday, and of course, Marie Antoinette. As their world dissolves into chaos and bloodshed, these four women lean on each other as they learn how make their voices heard, collectively and as individuals. This irreverent, girl-powered comedy is full of wit, and wisdom.

In keeping with the themes of The Revolutionists, BETC has assembled an all-female production team to bring Gunderson's play to life.

"There has been a lot of conversation in the theatre industry in recent years about the under-representation of women, particularly in directorial and design roles," said Weitz. "Given the content of the play, we felt it was important to give voice to as many of the talented female artists in our community as possible. I'm incredibly proud of this group and what it represents in terms of our continuing efforts toward greater diversity throughout our organization."

Be a part of the revolution, beginning September 16 for Opening Night for The Revolutionists at The Dairy Center For The Arts' in the Grace Gamm Theatre. Single tickets range from $20 to $45 and a 4-play subscription package is $141 and $129 for 65 or older.

In keeping with this season's embrace of positive rebellion and change, BETC has also unveiled a more contemporary look to its community: a new look and feel to go along with the ongoing commitment to exceptional modern plays and theatre that matters.
