Prepare yourself for a unicorn that's crazy about American History. Prepare yourself for a show that charges past the limits of comedy smashing through the boundaries of truth with its mighty horn of freedom and justice. Prepare yourself for "America The Unicorn."
Everyone knows that a unicorn makes the best history teacher. "America The Unicorn" is the 36th original sketch comedy revue written and performed by Bovine Metropolis Theater's sketch team, and it's taking absurdity to a whole new level. A unicorn will teach a reinvented history of the United States, a version that's magical, strange, and hilarious.
"The only limit is our imagination," says Director, Eric Farone. "The great thing about absurdity is that it is a limitless space. Also, just like good science fiction writing, the magic and absurdity let us make statements about today's issues."
You'll see some history being rewritten through the eyes of a troubled unicorn, resulting in some ludicrous sketches, the true story of Amelia Earhart's disappearance for example.
"It's definitely going to be magical," said Dee Morgenthaler, Cast Member and Writer, "People will quickly catch on that there is NO telling what will happen next. There will be dancing, singing, and digital shorts throughout the show. My absolute favorite scene is called "Abraham Lincoln 50 Shades of Twilight Pink"... I'll leave it at that."
There's no doubt this is going to be a nutty and entertaining show, however it's also a compelling take on subjective viewpoints and facts of history. This show takes those facts and viewpoints and spins them on their head.
"History is constantly being revisited from multiple perspectives," said Farone. "Like, "America: A History" vs. "A People's History of the United States" create very different surveys of American history. "America the Unicorn" is a magical rewrite via pop culture."
"It'll be very offbeat, the unicorn is not going to talk," said Kent Welborn, Cast Member and Writer.
"And we are all silently thrilled!" said Morgenthaler, "'America the Unicorn' is both the name of the unicorn and a metaphor that I find difficult to articulate but I feel very strongly that by the end of the show people will believe in unicorns... and America."
Instead of words, the history teaching Unicorn instructs through comedic sketches, video shorts and the pupils within the classroom are transported on a journey through the time and space of American History.
With all this magic and creativity surround this show, the cast is taking history and turning it on its head, repeatedly. Unicorns, magic and absurdity abound, and when the show is over you might return to earth with a new understanding of history and the wonder that it holds. Catch this show as soon as you can, because this will be one for the history books.
