Two charming and innocent little old ladies, Aunt Martha and Aunt Abby, are so soft-hearted, they can't bear to see elderly gentlemen suffering from loneliness. They even rent rooms to those lonely gentlemen. The only thing sweeter than the aunt's hearts is their homemade elderberry wine. Imagine the shock when their straight-laced nephew Mortimer comes across an elderly gentleman's remains in peaceful repose, tucked into a window seat. Could it be the sisters have a sinister plot that is more secret than their elderberry wine recipe? Conveniently, they have a brother who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and whom is always eager to dig a little more of the Panama Canal in the cellar. Mortimer has a lot to contend with as he tries to keep his beloved Elaine from surprises in the window seat and the cellar or from meeting long lost (and criminal) Uncle John who suffers from so much bad plastic surgery that he is a double for horror film actor Boris Karloff. This classic comedy is much too fast and far-fetched to be considered "dark;" it's just plain funny.
