The Rotary Club of Wilmington announced today that the club's weekly luncheon on Thursday, February 19, 2015 will feature guest speaker Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education.
"It is a great honor for our Rotary Club members to meet and hear from Secretary Duncan," said Club President, Michael Arrington. "We are thrilled that the Secretary has made the time to come to Wilmington to talk about his vision for the future of public education in the United States and how Delaware is a leader in educational improvement."
Introducing Secretary Duncan will be Delaware Governor Jack A. Markell. "Secretary Duncan's visit is an opportunity to highlight the progress our schools have made with the hard work of our educators and students. Our graduation rate is rising; our drop-out rate has reached a record low; and many more students are earning college credit while in high school," said Governor Markell.
Markell continued, "In our changing economy, good jobs require more skills, so we must continue to create more opportunities for our young people. We are using Thursday's events to highlight the importance of efforts that help more of our students graduate ready for college or career, from effectively implementing the Common Core Standards to our recently announced Pathways to Prosperity initiative that will offer students engaging and hands-on opportunities that are relevant for jobs in growing fields."
