Possum Point Players present the ground-breaking drama, "A Raisin in the Sun," June 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm. Tickets are $18, adults, and $17, students and seniors, and may be purchased at www.possumpointplayers.org or by calling 856-4560.

The play is set on Chicago's south side and the plot revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family. When an insurance money windfall opens opportunities for the family, dreams and desires of the matriarch and her two grown children pull them in different directions.

Mama dreams of moving to a new home in a better neighborhood while her son and daughter have their own aspirations, one of owning a business and another of attending medical school. The tensions in their family mix with the fear of prejudice they expect to face if they dare to move up the social and economic ladder to a new home. Sacrifice, trust and love among the Younger family and their heroic struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world make this a timeless story of hope and inspiration.

Winner of the 1959 NY Drama Critic's Award as Best Play of the Year, it has been hailed as a "pivotal play in the history of the American Black theatre." "A Raisin in the Sun" is directed by John Marino and Lorraine Marino is assistant director.

"A Raisin in the Sun" is being produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Possum Point Players is supported, in part, by grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
