The Delaware Theatre has announced the inaugural performance of the Play A Part series of fundraisers: A.R. Gurney's LOVE LETTERS, starring Governor and Mrs. Jack Markell. This event, co-chaired by Tatiana and Gerret Copeland and Ellen and Michael Kullman, will raise funds to support the theatre's artistic, education and community outreach programming. PLAY A PART: LOVE LETTERS will be performed on November 16, 2013.
The Pulitzer Prize-nominated LOVE LETTERS by A.R. Gurney tells the story of love and friendship between two childhood friends who together, traverse the challenges of life. "While the story is different than Jack's and mine" says Mrs. Markell, "we have known each other since Kindergarten and have grown up and grown together through the years". LOVE LETTERS' simple but elegant staging lends an atmosphere of intimacy to the entire play. Over the span of 25 years the play has been performed by John Rubenstein, Stockard Channing, Kathleen Turner, Christopher Walken and more. It is with great pride that the Delaware Theatre Company adds to that list Governor Jack Markell and First Lady Carla Markell.
The Markells, who have always been strong supporters of the arts, have gone on record as saying "When we speak up in support of the arts and participate in cultural events, we attest to the value of the arts in education and their contribution to our children, our communities and our nation's cultural legacy. The arts are an important part of our economic development efforts. Businesses follow the talent and talent follows quality of life."
"Jack and Carla are excited to Play A Part in the growth of the Delaware Theatre Company," says Martin "and are encouraging all to play their part in supporting Delaware's premier professional theatre on Wilmington's Riverfront...it's not often that I get to tell the Governor of any state what to do."
LOVE LETTERS will be performed at the Delaware Theatre Company on November 16, 2013. Tickets are available at two levels: Benefactor and Patron. Benefactor tickets are $500 per person and include a ticket to an exclusive Patron Party being held at the home of Yvonne and Brock Vinton, dinner on the evening of the event at the Riverfront Market, and entry to the performance.
