In 2016, Delaware Theatre Company brought the musical adaptation of the classic film DINER, written by Academy Award-winner Barry Levinson with music and lyrics by nine-time Grammy Award-winner Sheryl Crow, to the stage. Directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall, the musical was years in the making, having its initial regional premiere in DC's Signature Theatre in December 2014.
A Broadway transfer has long been talked about, and in a recent interview with Delaware Business Times, DTC's Executive Director Bud Martin revealed that it could still be on the horizon. It's just a matter of time. He told DBT: "The Shuberts want Diner, but they don't want to go up against 'Waitress.' It's a matter of timing."
The theatre company also has high hopes for some of it's other recent projects, which include Duncan Sheik and Nell Benjamin's Because of Winn-Dixie, Maurice Hines' Tappin' Thru Life, Neil Bartram and Brian Hill's Something Wicked This Way Comes, and Bruce Vilanch's A Sign of the Times, all of which have been developed with hopes for eventual bows on Broadway.
Set in Baltimore during 1959, Diner follows a circle of childhood friends who confront the realities of adulthood in the one place they know they will always be welcome: the all-night Diner.
The 2016 cast included: Ari Brand as Eddie, Aaron Finley as Billy, Joshua Franklin, Derek Klena as Boogie, Ethan Slater as Modell, Matthew James Thomas as Fenwick, and Noah Weisberg as Shrevie.
