Since I was working as Stage Manager for this show, I asked John Muller, a local teacher, to review Hallelujah Girls for me. Full disclosure: My wife plays one of the Hallelujah Girls - "Nita Mooney" and John's wife Nancy is Assistant Director of the show. - Kevin Smith

While I was watching The Hallelujah Girls by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten at the Kent County Theatre Guild in Dover, Delaware, on Saturday evening, I was reminded of Bertolt Brecht. He said, "From the start it has been the theatre's business to entertain people...it needs no further passport than fun." This is exactly what the cast of The Hallelujah Girls brought to its audience. Fun.

The story is simple. Sugar Lee (played by Kathy DeLong), going through "another" midlife crisis, decides to purchase an old church and turn it into a day spa. With the help of her friends, the Spa opens and the renovations begin. Enter the old flame, Bobby Dwayne Dillahunt (played by Arthur D. Paul), who agrees to help the ladies make some much needed repairs. Well, of course, one thing leads to another. Misunderstanding builds upon misunderstanding, and the hilarity ensues. The antagonist, Bunny Sutherland (played by Becki Polk) adds to the mix a few more obstacles for the ladies of Eden Falls, Georgia, but if you want to find out what happens, you will have to see the show. No spoilers here!

As an ensemble, the cast worked exceptionally well together bringing what really are two dimensional characters to life on the stage and effectively giving these characters some depth that the writers of the play clearly did not point out in their text. Strong acting from the cast brings the audience an enjoyable, silly story that allows the audience to sit back, relax and forget their cares, if only for an hour and a half.

The Hallelujah Girls continues for two more Fridays (November 15th and 22nd at 8 PM), two more Saturdays (November 16th and 23rd at 8 PM), and a matinee on Sunday, November 17th at 2 PM. This is a fun, romantic comedy that will entertain. After all, couldn't we all use a little fun every now and then!
