The catchphrase for this concert is Vive la France! ...Or, at least, vive la musique about France or by French composers. American Charles Peter Wuorinen’s Machault mon chou leads off the musical soirée. The best way to describe this work is in terms of time; it is a piece composed in the twentieth century with a corresponding structure, but it contains fourteenth-century harmonies of church origin written with a sense of modern drama, giving the brass and strings a chance to shine.
