Dare to Defy Productions evokes the dazzle of New York City and the sizzle of Havana, Cuba, with "Guys and Dolls," the final show of their 2016-2017 season. The musical comedy brings to life a mix of gamblers, gangsters and gutsy gals inspired by the short stories of Damon Runyon.
Rolling the dice is the vice of choice for Nathan Detroit (David McKibben). He has big spenders ready to join his latest illegal craps game, but he's having trouble arranging a safe location-and finding the money to pay for it. So he taps Sky Masterson (Brian Hupp), a man who's known for his willingness to gamble on anything and everything. Their $1000 bet: Sky has to get prim and pious do-gooder Sarah Brown (Esther Hyland) to go with him on a jaunt to Havana. Nathan certainly likes the odds; after all, he's kept his own fiancée, Miss Adelaide (Danielle Kubasky), waiting for their trip to the altar for 14 years! As Sarah and her colleagues search for sinners to reform, Nathan keeps looking to make his big score and Sky comes to find that love just may be the biggest gamble of all. "It's been called the quintessential Broadway musical. The energy just never lets up." Part of that electric vibe comes from the way the show highlights the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple.
"The city is almost alive," says Leavitt, "and its pulse is as strong at four o'clock in the morning-Sky's time of day, according to Sarah-as it is at noon. Plus the songs in the show are all classics, from the opening 'Fugue for Tinhorns' through 'A Bushel and a Peck' and 'Luck Be a Lady' to a jump-out-of-your-seat showstopper, 'Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat.' "
The show offers a glimpse of New Yorkers from a bygone era. Based on the Broadway-set stories of Damon Runyon-who fittingly enough was born in Manhattan (though Manhattan, Kansas)-"Guys and Dolls" captures his unique voice and outlook. So try your luck with these glib and glamorous "Guys and Dolls."
