Concordia University Theatre presents An Evening of Student-Directed, One-Act Plays unified by the theme of transformation, whether from sleep to wakefulness, insecurity to empowerment, caterpillar to butterfly, or even life to death.
Senior Theatre Studies major Anna McCauley will direct The Divine Fallacy, by Tina Howe. Chaos ensues as a camera-shy author, played by Kendra Theimer, arrives at the studio of a fashion photographer, played by CTX alum Preston Galban, to get a headshot taken for her upcoming novel.
The Art of Self-Defense, by Trish Johnson, will be directed by senior Molly Stewart. The comedy tells the story of a diverse group of women who discover the strength of female friendship after meeting in a T’ai Chi class. Pat Fick, Director of Student Ministry and Can-Do Missions, will play the role of Ruth, with Office of Philanthropy Associate Tori Thibodeaux as Frannie, Princess Jackson as Elizabeth, D’Avianna T. Crockett-Bickham as Jan, Gabriella O’Donnell as C. Y., and JimmyJames Nkone as a Male Tai-Chi Instructor.
In Harold Pinter’s play, A Kind of Alaska, based on the book Awakenings, by Oliver Sachs, a 45-year-old woman attempts to adjust to the world after waking up after 29 years in a sleeping sickness. The absurdist piece will be directed by senior theatre studies major Kendra Theimer. The cast includes Temiloluwa Odukoya as Deborah, D’Avianna T. Crockett-Bickham as Pauline, and CTX alum Sibonelo Shezi as Hornby.
David Ives’ Variations on the Death of Trotsky, a comic depiction the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky on the day of his demise, will be directed by Christian Garza, a multi-disciplinary major with emphases in English and theatre studies. The cast includes CTX alum Preston Galban as Ramón, Seth Silber as Trotsky, and freshman theatre studies major Genesis Espinoza as Mrs. Trotsky.
The plays are produced by the Director of Fine Arts, Dr. Kelly Carolyn Gordon, with costumes by Madison Murrah, lighting design by Liam Dolan-Henderson, and sound design by junior music major Calen Croft. The plays will be performed in Concordia’s Black Box Theatre, April 11-13 at 7:30 pm and April 14 at 2 pm. For general admission, single play tickets are $10. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
