WaterTower Theatre Artistic Director, Joanie Schultz, today announced that the "Pay It Forward with Pay What You Can" partner for WTT's upcoming production of Bread will be Big Thought in support of DaVerse Lounge.
In October of 2017, WTT announced the "Pay It Forward with Pay What You Can" initiative in which all proceeds from PWYC previews are donated to various causes and organizations in need. To date the program has raised over $1,500 in support of The Alley Theatre and UNIDOS Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief. WTT is proud to add a DFW non-profit to our growing list of partners.
DaVerse Lounge, originally founded by Will Richey and Lisa Holland, is an under-21 spoken word open mic and interactive art experience in collaboration with spoken word clubs and writing workshops across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The event, produced as a partnership between Big Thought and Journeyman Ink serves as an intergenerational celebration of the VOICE, CULTURE, and CREATIVITY of North Texas.
Bread by Regina Taylor has Dallas roots, much like DaVerse Lounge, and tells the story of the Baker family including soon to be high school graduate and aspiring slam-poet, Jr. Baker. Looking out over the uncertain landscape of 2017, Jr. is on the edge of his future, faced with an obstacle many soon-to-be-graduates face, stability or passion. DaVerse Lounge provides a platform for countless young North Texans who find themselves in Jr.'s shoes.
Big Thought is an education nonprofit that works with partners across the city to ensure all students have access to high-quality learning opportunities that promote creativity and social and emotional learning to better prepare kids for success in work and life. Big Thought believes the opportunity gap will only be solved by bringing the right opportunities to the kids who need them most. By connecting like-minded organizations, we customize programs to meet the unique needs of each community we serve. By igniting the imagination and engaging the whole child through accessible educational programs that reinforce core academic curricula, develop 21st century skills and address social and emotional needs, Big Thought is closing the gap - one child at a time.

Bread is nourishment. Bread is legacy. Bread is life itself. And bread is money. This world premiere by award-winning Dallas-born actress and playwright Regina Taylor weaves a compelling family drama of hopes, fears, thwarted dreams, and dark secrets against a turbulent backdrop of racial tension and social upheaval. It is early 2017; a time of change. James and Ruth are a middle class couple from Oak Cliff, a historic south Dallas neighborhood on the verge of gentrification. They plan a bright future for their teenage son and his soon-to-be-born brother. But when James' brother Jeb returns home, buried family tensions resurface and the past casts a troubling shadow across an uncertain future. Taylor's stirring, timely story of identity and family asks: How can we prepare the next generation for what's to come?
