Second Thought Theatre begins Belleville, the second show of its 2015 season, tonight with preview performances. Lee Trull returns to Second Thought Theater to direct this thrilling play about the choices people make and the subsequent ramifications. Belleville begins with previews tonight and runs through Saturday, June 13. All performances of Belleville will take place at Bryant Hall on the Kalita Humphreys Campus, 3636 turtle Creek Blvd. Tickets to Belleville can be purchased online at 2TT.co.
"The first time I read Belleville it deeply troubled me," said Trull. "For days after I kept thinking about it. Not only was it a great vehicle for actors but it also a complex play wrapped in a simple package: four characters, one apartment, two days. But what starts out as comedy/drama about modern marriage morphs sneakily into a psychological thriller and then shifts finally into something deeply tragic. It is a tricky play to pull off but we have the right cast and design team to make it happen and I think Dallas theater audiences are in for a big surprise."
Zack and Abby are a happy-looking young American couple living the dream. They've moved to the hip Belleville neighborhood of Paris where Zack works in not-for-profit medicine and Abby teaches yoga. The dream is tested though, by insecurity, dishonesty, and weakness. Written by critically acclaimed playwright Amy Herzog, Belleville is the heartbreaking examination of the breakdown of trust in a marriage and the danger of secrets.
STT resident artist Drew Wall (Booth, Nocturne) stars as Zack, who takes a job in Paris in an attempt to make his wife happy. Jenny Ledel returns to STT for the first time since 2012 as Abby, Zack's other half. Joining them are Rico Romalus Parker and Afomia Hailemeskel, both making their STT debut, as Alioune and Amina, Zack and Abby's landlords and friends.
Creating Zack and Abby's picture-perfect world are scenic designer Sarah Brown; lighting designer Aaron Johansen (Nocturne, Cock); and sound designer John Flores. Additional members of the creative team include Anne Schilling as the dialect coach and Carson McCain as assistant director.
