Rover Dramawerks will continue their 15th Anniversary Season with the World Premiere comedy The Cupcake Conspiracy, by C.J. Ehrlich and Philip J. Kaplan. Performances will be at Rover's new theatre venue in Plano, located in Ruisseau Village at 221 W. Parker Rd, Suite 580, at the northwest corner of Parker and 75. Performances are January 8-31, 2015, with shows on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., plus an additional matinee performance on Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m.
Max (played by Gary Eoff) is a timid nebbish who sneaks out on a blind date behind his soon-to-be ex wife's back and due to a case of mistaken identity at the top of the Empire State Building, he finds himself up to his neck in a terrorist plot involving cupcakes. Really evil cupcakes. His date with the sultry Natasha (Jessica Adame) should have gone to a mysterious man-of-a-thousand-identities (Robert San Juan) but instead, it could be the most exciting night of Max's life. All he has to do is foil Natasha's plot, keep her henchmen (Matt Stepan and Dale G. Gutt) at bay, and, most importantly, keep his wife (Kristi Smith) from finding out!
The Cupcake Conspiracy was selected by Rover Dramawerks as their inaugural New Play Contest winner from entries from all over the world. The submission period opened on April 15, 2014, with a limit of 150 full-length comedies or farces being accepted, and the cap was met within a week. The scripts were then narrowed down to seven finalists, and The Cupcake Conspiracy ultimately won the $500 prize, plus a full mainstage production at Rover Dramawerks.
The Cupcake Conspiracy's playwriting team of C.J. Ehrlich and Philip J. Kaplan will be coming to the Metroplex from Chappaqua and Brooklyn, New York, respectively, the first week of January. They will attend some of the final rehearsals and be at all performances during opening weekend. Production of the winning full-length play from Rover's New Play Contest is funded in part from a grant by the Texas Commission on the Arts.
Carol M. Rice serves as director of The Cupcake Conspiracy, with Darcy Koss as Stage Manager. Set design is by Erica Rémi Lorca with lighting design by Jeff Mabray and sound design by Jason Rice. Costumes are by Cynthia Beene, and props are by Jack Piland.
