Rover Dramawerks will present the revival of the hilarious Gilligan's Island: the Musical at the Courtyard Theater, 1509 H Avenue in Plano. Performances are January 26 through February 18, with shows on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., with an additional matinee performance on Saturday, February 4 at 2:00 p.m.
Sherwood Schwartz, the original creator of the successful Gilligan's Island TV series, co-authored the book with his son and long-time collaborator Lloyd J. Schwartz, with music and lyrics by Sherwood Schwartz's daughter and son-in-law, Hope Juber and Laurence Juber (best known as a guitarist with Paul McCartney's group Wings). Given its regional premiere in the Metroplex by Rover Dramawerks in 2008, Rover is excited to bring back this popular audience favorite.
Based on the beloved TV series, a small touring boat has been shipwrecked on a desert island, and the seven castaways must work together to try to get back to civilization while overcoming hurricanes, extra-terrestrials, and their biggest obstacle, Gilligan himself (played by Coby Cathey), who manages to bungle every chance of rescue. With the Skipper, too (Russell Harris), the Millionaire (Donald C. Cook) and his Wife (Lauren Gao), the Movie Star (Heather Walker Shin), the Professor (Ian Moore), and Mary Ann (Jennifer Sublett)...and an Alien (played by Elizabeth Lambert). All the fun and silliness of the original series, plus singing and dancing!
Rebecca McDonald will helm the "tale of a fateful trip" as director and choreographer, with musical direction by John Norine, Jr. Sarah Barnes acts as Assistant Director/Stage Manager, with set design by Abigail Kipp. Costumes are by Jesse Thaxton and props are by Nicole Alexander. Brooks Powers is lighting designer, Mason York is sound designer, and Lindsey Humphries is light and sound board operator.
Tickets for Gilligan’s Island: the Musical are $18.00 on Thursdays and matinee and $22.00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Thursday, January 26 is Preview Night, and all seats are “pay-what-you-can.”
