The Klein Oak Fine Arts Department, whose recent production of SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, earned Tommy Tune Award nominations in 14 of the 15 categories will participate in the Awards show on April 16. Klein Oak High School was nominated in the following 14 categories: Best Musical Best Direction Best Choreography/Musical Staging Best Musical Direction Best Orchestra Best Scenic Design Best Costume Design Best Lighting Design Best Crew and Technical Execution Best Ensemble/Chorus Best Leading Actor - Ryne Nardecchia / Sweeney Todd Best Leading Actress - Morgan Starr / Mrs. Lovett Best Supporting Actress - Sarah Holevinski / Johanna Best Featured Performer - Alec Michael Ryan / Judge Turpin
Klein Oak will participate in the Tommy Tune Awards show at 7 pm April 16 at The Hobby Center. The televised event will feature Klein Oak students in the Best Musical category and in the medleys for best leading actor and leading actress, as well as in the opening and closing numbers. The Tommy Tune Awards are a founding member of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, known as The Jimmy Awards, celebrated annually in June in NYC. The winner in the Leading Actor and Leading Actress categories will represent Houston musical theatre programs at the Jimmys.
Since its inception in 2002 the Tommy Tune Awards has grown to be the largest celebration of High School Musical Theatre in Houston. The annual awards ceremony sponsored by Theatre Under the Stars recognizes excellence by high school students and teachers throughout the nine county metropolitan area. Forty-five area high schools participated in the 2013 competition.
