The score of IT'S A BIRD...IT'S A PLANE...IT'S SUPERMAN was originally by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams with a book by David Newman and Robert Benton. The story followed familiar characters as well as lesser known characters like Dr. Abner Sedgwick and Max Mencken. It opened at the Alvin Theatre on March 29, 1966 and was directed by Hal Prince. It only ran for 129 performances but stars Cassidy, O'Sullivan, and Marand were nominated for Tony Awards. The book has been rewritten by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for the new production which takes place in toe 1930s and features villain Lex Luthor instead of Dr. Abner Sedgwick. The Strouse-Adams score will still be used with songs moved around for the new plot line and characters. The cast will include Cavenaugh, Christopher Siber, Orfeh, and Leslie Kritzer.
