The play is set in 1929, on the eve of the Great Depression, and America is on the precipice of big change with a looming financial crisis. In the small town of Harrison, Texas, the residents of a local boarding house deal with numerous dilemmas, both large and small. Quarrels arise between estranged husbands and wives, the future of a railroad engineer hangs in the balance, and the town is turned upside down with the coming of the 'talkies' to the local movie theatre. It's the end of an era, and a job, for the woman who plays live music for the films.
Playwright Horton Foote was born in Wharton, Texas, and incorporated semi-autobiographical nuances into his plays and screenplays. His Texas roots shine through a number of his works, which often focus on the rural South, including 1918, On Valentine's Day, Courtship, The Young Man From Atlanta (winner of the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Drama), and, of course, his adapted screenplay for To Kill a Mockingbird, which won him the first of two Academy Awards. TALKING PICTURES marks only the second Horton Foote play produced by MainStage Irving-Las Colinas, the last being The Trip to Bountiful in 1997.
TALKING PICTURES stars Marisa Duran (Katie Bell Jackson), Kristi Mills (Vesta Jackson), Tracie Foster (Myra Tolliver), Eric Devlin (MR. Jackson), Rose Ann Holman (Mrs. Jackson), Cory Germany (Willis), Elmer Mejia-Yanez (Estaquio Trevino), Grayson Oliver (Pete), Rhonda Durant (Gladys), Nick Forrest (Ashenback), Jason Oliver (Gerard Anderson).
The TALKING PICTURES production team includes Director Amber Devlin, Producers Mary Bongfeldt and Tom Ortiz, Stage Manager Branson White, Costume Designs by Dallas Costume Shoppe, Lighting Designer Sam Nance, Set Designer Clare Floyd Devries, Sound Designer Jeff Mizener, Properties Designer Jo Anne Hull and Master Carpenter Kris Hampton.
