Marianela is a poor illiterate woman who leads a life of infectious joy and singing. Everyone who comes in contact with her is transformed and falls in love with her. She works as a "seeing" eye person for a young man, Pablo, who lost his sight at birth. Pablo falls in love with her even though he is engaged to Florentine. Florentine's family has arranged for an expensive and experimental surgery for him to cure his blindness with the condition that he goes through with the marriage. Will Pablo choose Marianela or his sight? This visionary tale of love and choices incorporate Sprituals, Slave Songs, and songs from the 1800's.
