The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, almost invariably shortened to Marat/Sade, is a bloody and unrelenting depiction of human struggle and suffering which asks whether true revolution comes from changing society or changing oneself.
Blurring the boundary between reality and delusion, Marat/Sade depicts the events of July 13, 1808, when Charlotte Corday murdered Jean Paul Marat, an architect of France's Reign of Terror in the aftermath of the Revolution. The "play" is directed by the Marquis de Sade and performed by the residents of an unnamed institution. As the play progresses, the unspoken social contract between viewer and performer breaks down as the world of the play devolves into chaos.
Marat/Sade is produced by L.I.P. Service and presented at Amy's Studio of Performing Arts (11888 Marsh ln, #600, Dallas, TX. 75234) from April 20th-May 6th. Tickets and more information can be found at www.lipserviceproductions.info .
