Having expanded last summer to accommodate demand, Houston's most popular non-profit performing arts summer camp is able to accept a record number of students while keeping classes small.
With 581 students already registered for summer 2009, Kids On Stage Summer Camp has FOUR locations around Houston: in the Rice Village, the Museum District, Bellaire/Meyerland (at the Shlenker School), and a new location in Montrose (St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on West Alabama). For ages 4 - 5, there are half-day camps from 9 a.m. - noon; for ages 6 - 14, there are full-day camps from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Some options for extended-day care are available for all full-day students. To highlight all of their skills, students present their final performance on a Main Street Theater stage.
Kids On Stage Summer Camp is a performing arts playground for students of all ages and skill levels. With their own imaginations as the spark, students collaborate to create an original play and a dance piece. Students take charge of all aspects of performance - from characters, dialogue and story to sets and costumes. The energetic teachers are professional actors, dancers, directors and educators, and provide the guidance and know-how to bring the stories the children dream up to the stage. Even the camp theme, "Abracadabra," was selected from dozens of student suggestions in the annual naming competition. The KOS camp received the Nickelodeon Parents' Pick Award for Best Summer Camp (in the "Big Kids" category) in 2008.
