Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center (KVPAC) proudly wraps up a wonderfully successful summer of theatrical production camps with the much anticipated Once On This Island. This family friendly musical is based on the book My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy and is directed by Tamara Grisko. It is a calypso-flavored re-telling of the traditional Little Mermaid story. "Once On This Island has brought out the best in all of us," explains Mrs. Grisko. "Directing this touching story, brought to life with amazing music by this fantastic cast and production team, has been like taking a vacation on the island."

The tale is set on a Caribbean island in the Antilles, which is the home to two entirely different societies: the poor peasants and the aristocratic Grand Hommes. A group of storytellers tell the tale of the poor peasant girl Ti Moune, who longs for a grander life and falls in love with Daniel, an upper class boy whose life she saves after a car crash. Various gods control the peasants' lives including the god of Love (Erzulie), Earth (Asaka), Water (Agwe), and Death (Papa Ge). The show focuses on the effects social class prejudice and divisions have on love.

"KVPAC's Performing Arts Department has pledged to not only teach and entertain, but inspire and expand the range of its students with as many new and dynamic productions it is able to produce," says Lisa Connolly, KVPAC's Director of Marketing. "Here is a terrific example of a classic tale [The Little Mermaid] we all know and love presented in a completely different and creative fashion. Audiences of all ages will love this culturally rich adaptation."

Performances are Friday, August 20, 2010 @ 7:00pm and Saturday, August 21, 2010 @ 2:00pm and 7:00pm. All seats are $6.00 and are available online at www.kvpac.org. For a special ticket price deal, join KVPAC Facebook and find the secret Coupon Code to this production!
