The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced that Jubilee Theatre was a recipient of an Art Works Grant in the amount of $15,000.
The award is for Jubilee Theatre to commission a new musical based on African-American cowboys in Texas and the Southwestern United States. Jubilee Theatre was one of five recipients from the NEA in the Fort Worth/Dallas area. “This is very exciting for us,” stated Board of Trustees President Blake Moorman, “and continues our tradition of creating original musicals that speak to the African-American experience.” The new musical will be developed by Jubilee Theatre’s Playwright-in-Residence Celeste Bedford Walker and Artistic Director Tre Garrett. It will be work-shopped in the summer of 2012 and will premiere as the opening production of the 2012-2013 Season.
Jubilee Theatre also announced the appointment of Katherine Ware as managing director for the theater company. Ms. Ware comes to Jubilee Theatre from the Arts Council of Fort Worth and Tarrant County where she held the position of Vice President of Community Programs. A seasoned arts administrator, Ms. Ware brings years of experience in management, development and marketing for the arts. She also holds a M.A. in arts administration and a M.B.A from Southern Methodist University. “Katherine understands the Fort Worth arts community,” stated Artistic Director Tre Garrett, “and holds ties to many of our funders. We look forward to having her administrative leadership with us at Jubilee Theatre.” Ms. Ware replaces Benjamin Espino as Managing Director. Benjamin is now General Manager of the Dallas Latino Cultural Center.
